  • (MacBook) Remove the sound after writing a ` in Stata

    Hello,

I don't know if this is a Stata issue or not but either way I believe some of you may have had the same concern and might be able to help me. I just bought a MacBook (I was working with Windows before) and when I'm working on Stata I like to listen to music. However whenever I write a ` there's a little sound that's quite bothering when I listen to a high volume (which isn't good for my ears, I know !), because this sound also gets loud and is quite unpleasant to hear. When I write a ` here, nothing happens though, which makes me think it's only on Stata.

Apologies for the unusual question and I wish everyone the best for their projects

I haven't noticed. this behavior before. Reboot and see if it persists.

Daniel : Sorry for the late reply. I could solve the problem (although inefficiently) by going to the settings of my Macbook, to the sound section and I could mute what OSX calls "Alert sounds" (the sound was the "Boop" one in the list). I still don't know why my Macbook plays this sound whenever I write a grave accent in Stata tho, I hope I won't have another kind of alert that requires my attention !

This is very annoying. I would like to keep the systemwide alert sound turned on so that I can understand when my action hasn't had any consequences elsewhere. I'm trying to figure out whether there's a way to turn off all sounds from Stata, and from Stata only.

I'm not sure what sounds you're getting from Stata; I barely ever get any. I can't even replicate OP's issue.

I don't think Stata has any universal mute setting. The only sound-related setting I am aware of is in Settings > General > Notify user when Stata is done > Play sound with notification. It is turned off for me, probably by default.

I don't think macOS offers any easy way to mute sounds from specific apps. But this may be possible using third-party apps.

OP, could you please go to the apple icon and hit system settings > sound, then at the top next to "alert sound" hit the play button? I just want to identify whether the sound you are talking about is the MacOS alert sound. If the sound is the alert sound then I'd be willing to bet the issue has to do with the OS. Either an accessibility setting is on when it shouldn't be, or the file that governs those settings could be corrupt.
